The education for overseas students in China is an important part of China's international strategy and foreign policy. The ‘Outline of the National Medium and Long-Term Education Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020)’ and ‘Study in China Plan’ have proposed a goal that ‘the number of overseas students studying in China will exceed 500,000 by 2020’. Vocational education students become the new force of foreign students in China and a new growth point of the number of foreign students. At the same time, foreign students play an important role in the process of vocational education going abroad, promoting the internationalization of vocational education and upgrading our country's soft power and influence.

Taking full advantage of its advantageous majors, internationalized teachers and good teaching resources, with the opportunity in 2013 that Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand visited the university, TSGUAS enrolledsix (6)overseas diploma students from mechatronics major andone (1)from Austria's franchise management major from Chitralada School, which belongs to Princess Sirindhorn. Thus, it became the first vocational university in Tianjin that carried out academic education for overseas students and created a precedent for the education of overseas students in university. After nearly five years efforts and exploration, now TSGUAS has overseas students from Germany, Spain, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Kazakhstan and Vietnam, has trained more than 200 overseas students, of which the total number of diploma students reached 100 people.

Since we first enrolled overseas students in 2013, after more than 7 years, the university has recruited 186 international students, including 98 undergraduates, 86 vocational students, and 2 advanced students. The enrollment countries rely on the Luban workshops in Cambodia and Nigeria to cover the Lancang-Mekong coast and some countries along the Belt and Road. Countries that have recruited international students include: Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nigeria and Kazakhstan. As of March 2021, there are a total of 88 international students enrolled in the university, distributed in 8 majors in Communication Engineering, Logistics Management, Aircraft Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Fine Arts, Automation, Mechatronics and Audio-visual Technology. The majors studied by international students take advantage of the university's practical teaching in the manufacturing industry, and export advanced and cutting-edge industry technology to meet the needs of enterprises in the country of origin. After returning home, international students can become the technical expertise of the industry.

The Tianjin Sino-German University of Applied Sciences has 3 projects in the special scholarships for international students of the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission, namely the Cambodian Luban Workshop Project, the Sino-Thai Engineering Talent Training Project and the Higher Vocational Undergraduate Scholarship Project. The total annual scholarship is more than 600,000 yuan, covering Thailand , Cambodia and Indonesia. In addition to the Tianjin Municipal Government Scholarship, there are more than 2 million Lanmei special scholarships covering international students from the five Lancang-Mekong countries, and over 600,000 school-level scholarships to support foreign students with excellent academic performance. The generous scholarship support provides a strong guarantee for international students to study in China. Among the 88 currently enrolled students, there are 26 Tianjin government scholarship students, 48 Lanmei special scholarship students, 4 school scholarship students, and 10 self-financed students.
